35 Weeks Pregnant

Getting ready

This week your baby is about the size of a honeydew melon.

How your baby is developing

  • Your baby is getting noticeably chubbier, which helps with temperature after birth.
  • There is less space in the womb now, but movement still matters.

What may be happening in your body

  • Heartburn and indigestion can be especially stubborn in these last weeks, as there's little room left for your stomach.
  • Sore ribs are common now — often your baby, head down and kicking away. If the pain is really bad, or right under your ribs, talk to your midwife or doctor in case it's a sign of pre-eclampsia.
  • Some people start to notice colostrum, the first milk, leaking a little from their breasts.

How you may be feeling

  • As maternity leave or the birth draws closer, your mind can stay busy with lists and plans.
  • Anticipation and tiredness can sit together, so you might feel keyed up and drained at once.
  • Some people feel a pull to have everything 'just so', which can add its own quiet pressure.

Worth remembering

You should still feel movements as strongly and regularly as in previous weeks — if they change or stop, talk to your midwife or doctor straight away.

A closer look

Heartburn as space runs low

With your baby taking up more room and pregnancy relaxing the muscles at the top of your stomach, heartburn and indigestion are often at their most persistent in late pregnancy. Smaller meals more often, and sitting upright rather than lying down soon after eating, help many people. Propping your head and shoulders up in bed can make nights more comfortable.

Getting ready can be a lot

Preparing for a baby — leave, plans, and all the advice around you — can make this a busy and sometimes anxious time. It can help to talk things through with the people you trust rather than carry it all in your head. You don't need everything perfect for your baby to be ready.

Something you can do this week

A good time to think about birth preferences, newborn preparation, comfort, and who you want around you.

What comes next

Full term is close now, and your baby continues getting ready.
