34 Weeks Pregnant

Nesting feelings

This week your baby is around the size of a cantaloupe melon.

How your baby is developing

  • Your baby keeps growing and is putting on fat, which helps with warmth after birth.
  • Many babies are settling toward a head-down position around now, though not all.

What may be happening in your body

  • Around now many babies are settling into a head-down position ready for birth, though some take longer and a few turn later.
  • If your baby has dropped lower into your pelvis ('lightening'), breathing can feel easier and heartburn may ease — though you may need to pee more and walking can feel like more of a struggle.
  • Leg cramps, often striking at night, can keep disturbing your sleep at this stage.

How you may be feeling

  • Some people start thinking about maternity leave and how they want to step back from work.
  • The urge to sort and get things ready — the 'nesting' feeling — can come in waves.
  • Wondering whether you'll feel ready in time is common, even when a lot is already in hand.

Worth remembering

There is no perfect way to prepare — a few ready things is more than enough.

A closer look

Your baby settling head-down

Around this stage many babies move head down into the pelvis, in a staged process called 'engagement'. The drop is sometimes called 'lightening': it frees up space in your abdomen, gives your lungs a bit of a break, and can ease heartburn. It doesn't mean birth is about to start, though — it can still be several weeks away.

An aching back

The weight you're carrying out front, softened pregnancy ligaments, and your baby's position all put more strain on your back, so backache is common now. A warm bath, good back support whenever you sit, resting when you can, and flat, supportive shoes ease it for many people. It's one of the most common aches this far into pregnancy.

Something you can do this week

A few simple, ready things can feel reassuring — there is no perfect list.

What comes next

Around week thirty-five many begin final birth preparations.
