How your baby is developing
- Moving toward something interesting may happen by crawling, bottom-shuffling, rolling, pivoting — or not yet at all. None of these is ahead of the others.
- Changing position to reach something is often the first sign that the destination mattered more than the comfort.
- Putting an object into a container, then taking it out, may become a game in itself — the taking out usually comes first.
- The index finger may be used more deliberately to poke, point at or explore small details.
- A simple sound or gesture you make may be copied back, sometimes after a delay long enough that you have moved on.
- Making a lot of different sounds, including repeated strings, is common around nine months.
- Familiar routine phrases may be understood from the situation as much as the words — a coat, a door, a particular tone.
- Looking when their name is called is common around nine months.
Everyday care and connection
- Let the baby choose how to move. Safe floor space is more useful than any device.
- A large safe container and a few objects too big to swallow is the whole activity.
- Copy their sound or gesture, then wait. Being copied back is what makes copying worth doing.
