Steamed broccoli and carrot pieces

SnackPrep 8 minCook 16 minPortions: 3

Ingredients

  • 4 broccoli florets
  • 1 medium carrot

Method

  1. Wash the broccoli and break it into florets, leaving the stalk as a handle.
  2. Peel the carrot and cut it into finger-thick sticks; do not cut round slices.
  3. Steam with no salt added until both squash easily between your finger and thumb.
  4. If a piece is still firm, cook it longer; do not serve it firm.
  5. Let it cool to warm, and let your child feed themselves sitting upright with someone beside them.

Texture

Soft florets and sticks that squash easily under your finger, with none of the crisp, firm carrot texture left.

Serving

Put one or two pieces down at a time and let your child pick them up.

Preparing for choking safety

Raw carrot is never served and carrot is not cut into round slices but served as long sticks. The firm broccoli stem is not used.

Storage

Serve as soon as it is made. If you want to keep what is left over, refrigerate it and use it within 2 days. Throw away a half-eaten portion rather than storing or reheating it.

Safety

Your child should be sitting upright and someone should stay with them while they eat. No salt or sugar is added to these recipes; honey is not given before one year. Their back teeth may not be through yet, so every piece must be soft enough to squash with gums and cut to a safe size. Children do not all manage the same texture at the same age — follow your child's pace rather than pushing. If your child has an allergy, eczema, or a family history of allergy, talk to your GP or health visitor before introducing new foods.
