39 Weeks Pregnant

Almost there

This week your baby is around the size of a small watermelon.

How your baby is developing

  • Your baby is close to fully ready, though timing still varies.
  • Final growth and maturing continue.

What may be happening in your body

  • As your baby settles down toward your pelvis, pressure low in your bump and pelvis can increase.
  • You might notice more vaginal discharge than usual around now.
  • Sleep can become very broken and your body can feel heavy and tired.

How you may be feeling

  • An 'any day now' feeling can bring excitement and impatience in the same breath.
  • A long wait can be tiring, and impatience is very common in these final weeks.
  • Questions from others — 'no baby yet?' — can start to wear on you.

Worth remembering

Feeling every emotion at once is normal this close to birth.

A closer look

Pressure low in your bump

As birth gets closer, your baby may move down into your pelvis. You'll probably feel increased pressure at the bottom of your bump now, and back pain can build as the baby presses against your spine. It's a common part of these last weeks.

The emotional weight of waiting

For most parents these last weeks feel like the longest, and pregnancy can be a stressful time as the date nears. An 'is it today?' question can be hard to switch off. This impatience and tiredness are very common and don't mean you're doing anything wrong.

What comes next

Your due date arrives next week, though babies keep their own timing.
