Second trimester

23 Weeks Pregnant

Steady changes

This week your baby is around the size of a grapefruit.

How your baby is developing

  • Your baby is putting on size gradually.
  • Development continues steadily this week.

What may be happening in your body

  • Your breasts may start leaking a little colostrum — an early type of milk that helps boost a newborn's immunity.
  • Rib pain can start as your rib cage expands, and you may feel a bit more breathless as the growing baby puts pressure on your lungs — putting your feet up and resting is the best remedy.
  • Over the next few weeks your baby's kicks will get stronger, and you may even start to see your tummy move.

How you may be feeling

  • A clearly visible bump can draw more attention and advice from others, and setting gentle limits on that is allowed.
  • Some people feel proud of how far they've come, while others feel more tired or self-conscious as their body changes — there's room for all of it.
  • Broken or lighter sleep can start to affect your mood, and it's understandable to feel more short-tempered on tired days.

Worth remembering

Get to know your baby's rhythms — and talk to your midwife or doctor if the kicking slows down.

A closer look

Why your back aches now

Pregnancy hormones soften and loosen your ligaments to prepare your body for birth, and your growing bump shifts your posture forward. Together these put extra strain on your lower back and pelvis, which can bring aching. Flat, supportive shoes, resting when you can, and good back support when sitting may help ease it.

Movements growing stronger

The gentle flutters of earlier weeks often start to feel firmer now, with clearer nudges, rolls or kicks. Your baby still has quiet spells when they sleep, so movement that comes and goes through the day is expected. Getting to know what's usual for your baby now will help you recognise their pattern in the weeks ahead.

Something you can do this week

Pausing to rest and check in with how you feel is worth it.

What comes next

Week twenty-four often marks the approach of the third trimester.
