The 1–2 year stage

Walking, first words and a much stronger opinion about everything. The daily activity matches the month your child is actually in, the recipes are written for toddler meals, and the development content is written for this age rather than for children in general.

What happens during the Child 1–2 years stage?

This is the stage of strong preferences that cannot yet be explained — which is what makes it exhausting and funny within the same hour.

  • Movement becomes the main activity, and so does climbing onto things that were previously safe.
  • First words tend to arrive unevenly, and a child often understands more than they can say.
  • Wanting to do it themselves often comes before being able to, and much of the day's friction starts there.
  • Meals get opinionated — foods accepted last week can be refused this week for no stated reason.

Month by month

Each month of the second year has its own page: movement and daily skills, language and thinking, and social and emotional development.

How does ParentSide understand the Child 1–2 years stage?

In this stage there is often a gap between what a child wants, what they can do, and what they can explain — and a lot of the day happens inside that gap. So what helps here is participation rather than explanation: helping tasks that genuinely finish, imitation games where the child sets the move, and an idea that is over in two minutes. It is a tiring stage, and the tiredness comes from how much is being learned at once rather than from the child.
