Child 1–2 years
14 Month Old
Getting around a familiar room starts to look purposeful, and pointing or sounds are increasingly used to bring you into what is happening.
Movement and daily skills
- Moving around a familiar space may look more decided — a destination rather than an exploration.
- Carrying a light object while changing position is a balance problem being solved in real time.
Language and thinking
- Pointing, gesturing or vocalising to ask for something, or to share what they have noticed, may become more frequent.
- Copying a familiar action — stirring, wiping, brushing — often comes before copying a word.
Social and emotional development
- Taking a more active part in dressing or mealtimes may show up as holding still, offering an arm, or reaching for the spoon.
- Playing near you rather than with you is ordinary and does not mean interest is fading.
Try together
Narrate one everyday routine out loud while it happens — getting dressed, or laying out lunch — and leave gaps for them to join in.
