8 Month Old Baby

Around eight months

What this month often looks like

  • Around now some babies become more wary of strangers or upset at separations — often a normal sign of their growing bond.
  • Movement is becoming more of a theme for some.
  • Every baby develops at their own pace.

How your baby is developing

  • Leaning on their hands while sitting with support is common around six months.
  • Support may be needed for a shorter stretch than before, though a wobble is still expected.
  • Both hands may work on the same object — one holding while the other explores.
  • Banging, tapping or turning an object is a way of asking what it does.
  • A toy on the far side may be reached for across the body, which usually takes a moment of balance first.
  • Sitting may hold long enough for one hand to leave the floor and play.
  • A dropped object may be looked for rather than forgotten — the looking often comes before the finding.
  • Babble may take on more consonant-like sounds, repeated in strings during play.

Everyday care and connection

  • Sitting close by rather than propping with cushions lets a wobble end safely.
  • Two lightweight, safe objects give both hands something to do at once.
  • Place a toy slightly off to one side during supervised floor play rather than straight ahead.
  • Hiding part of a toy under a cloth, leaving an edge showing, is enough of a puzzle at this stage.

How you may be feeling

  • Sudden clinginess can feel intense.
  • It can be common, and it usually eases with time.
  • Equipment that promises to speed sitting up is rarely needed.
  • Repetition is the point here, not variety.
  • Balance and reaching are being learned together, not one after the other.
  • Dropping things repeatedly is research, however it looks from where you are standing.

Something that may help

Gentle reassurance and predictable goodbyes can help you both.
