Banana and egg mash

BreakfastPrep 4 minCook 10 minPortions: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 ripe banana

Method

  1. Boil the egg until both the white and the yolk are completely solid.
  2. Peel it into a bowl and check that no fragment of shell is left.
  3. Add the banana and mash the two together with a fork, leaving small soft pieces.
  4. Serve straight away; add no sugar and no honey.

Texture

A moist, lumpy mash kept from drying by the banana, with no crumbling pieces of egg.

Serving

Serve as soon as you mash it, as banana darkens on standing. This recipe is not reheated.

Preparing for choking safety

Both the white and the yolk must be solid; lightly cooked egg is never served. Banana is mashed rather than added as round slices. Dry yolk gathers in the mouth, so the banana moistens it.

Storage

Serve as soon as it is mixed; this recipe is not reheated. Throw away a half-eaten portion rather than keeping it.

Safety

Your baby should be sitting upright and someone should stay with them while they eat. Add no salt, sugar or honey; honey is not given before one year. Your baby may not have teeth yet, so every piece must be soft enough to squash with gums. Babies do not all manage the same texture at the same age — follow your baby's pace rather than pushing. If your baby has an allergy, eczema, or a family history of allergy, talk to your GP or health visitor before introducing new foods. Introduce foods that can trigger an allergic reaction one at a time and in small amounts, so you can spot any reaction.
