Baked whiting and carrot cakes

Main mealPrep 15 minCook 25 minPortions: 3

Ingredients

  • 70 g boneless whiting fillet
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 medium potato
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Method

  1. Peel and cube the potato and carrot, boil with no salt for 15 minutes until soft and mash with a fork.
  2. Steam the whiting for 10 minutes until the flesh is opaque throughout.
  3. Lift the fish onto a plate, check it through with your fingers, remove every bone and flake it.
  4. Mix the mashed vegetables, fish and olive oil, then shape flattened cakes in your palm.
  5. Bake on a lined tray at 190 °C for 15 minutes; once cooled, cut into strips.

Texture

Lightly golden outside, soft and moist inside, easy to squash with gums.

Serving

Serve in strips and let your child pick them up.

Preparing for choking safety

Every fish bone is found by hand and removed, and the fish must be fully cooked. The cakes are flattened rather than round and are cut into strips — round cakes can block the airway.

Storage

Serve as soon as it is mixed; this recipe is not reheated. Throw away a half-eaten portion rather than keeping it.

Safety

Your child should be sitting upright and someone should stay with them while they eat — never while walking, running or in a moving car. No salt or sugar is added to these recipes. Their back teeth may not be fully through, so every piece must be soft enough to squash with gums and cut to a safe size. Round foods such as grapes and cherry tomatoes are always quartered lengthways. Whole nuts and popcorn are never given. Egg, meat and fish must be cooked all the way through, and unpasteurised dairy is not used. Children do not all manage the same texture at the same age — follow your child's pace rather than pushing. If your child has an allergy, eczema, or a family history of allergy, talk to your GP or health visitor before introducing new foods. Introduce foods that can trigger an allergic reaction one at a time and in small amounts, so you can spot any reaction.
