Baked fish fingers
Main mealPrep 15 minCook 15 minPortions: 3
Ingredients
- 150 g boneless whiting fillet
- 3 tablespoons finely ground oats
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
Method
- Check the fillet through with your fingers, find and remove every bone, and do not use the skin.
- Cut the fish into finger-thick fingers.
- Beat the egg and put the ground oats on a separate plate; dip each finger in the egg, then coat it in the oats.
- Lay them on a lined tray and drizzle the olive oil over them.
- Bake at 200 °C for 15 minutes, until the flesh is opaque throughout and flakes with a fork.
- Check each finger for bones once more after baking, then let it cool to warm.
Texture
Lightly crisp outside, with moist fish that flakes inside, never dry.
Serving
Give one finger at a time and let your child pick them up.
Preparing for choking safety
Bones must be searched for one by one both before and after cooking; whiting has fine bones. The skin is not used. Smoked, cured, raw or lightly cooked fish is never served.

Storage
Serve as soon as it is mixed; this recipe is not reheated. Throw away a half-eaten portion rather than keeping it.
Safety
Your child should be sitting upright and someone should stay with them while they eat — never while walking, running or in a moving car. No salt or sugar is added to these recipes. Avoid hard foods such as raw carrot or apple pieces, and cut food into small pieces. Round foods such as grapes and cherry tomatoes are always cut into quarters. Whole nuts and popcorn are never given. Egg, meat and fish must be cooked all the way through, and unpasteurised dairy is not used. Children do not all manage the same texture at the same age — follow your child's pace rather than pushing. If your child has an allergy, eczema, or a family history of allergy, talk to your family doctor or paediatrician before introducing new foods. Introduce foods that can trigger an allergic reaction one at a time and in small amounts, so you can spot any reaction.
