First trimester

7 Weeks Pregnant

Settling in

This week your baby is around the size of a blueberry.

How your baby is developing

  • Lots of early development is happening, even if your body looks the same.
  • Limbs and facial features are slowly forming.

What may be happening in your body

  • Nausea and fatigue can feel at their most demanding around now, often peaking in these middle weeks of the first trimester.
  • Strong food aversions can make meals you normally enjoy suddenly hard to face.
  • Everyday tasks may take more out of you than usual, even when you've rested.

How you may be feeling

  • It's common to swing between excitement about the pregnancy and sheer exhaustion within the same day.
  • Some people feel a quiet guilt for not feeling more glowing while they're this wiped out.
  • On the heaviest days, it can help to remember you're managing far more than shows on the outside.

Worth remembering

Hard early weeks do not predict the rest of your pregnancy.

A closer look

The invisible workload of week seven

Even though your body may look no different, a lot of development is underway, and it's common to feel wiped out and queasy at the same time. For many, nausea and tiredness are around their peak in these weeks before easing later in the first trimester. Having lots of symptoms, or fewer than you expected, are both common, and neither predicts the rest of your pregnancy.

Something you can do this week

Eating little and often, and resting, helps some parents through this stretch.

What comes next

Around week eight the embryo starts to be called a foetus as growth continues.
